The Super Oil that is… Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rapidly becoming incredibly popular in the western world with many celebrities hailing the super oil. However, on my travels to Colombia I discovered it is a traditional product in the tropical world that has been used for thousands of years holding various properties in food, medicine and industry. And it is no surprise why its popularity is sky rocketing in this part of the world with the many benefits in obtains.

Coconut oil is natural oil, produced in a wet or dry from the coconut. It uses have been marketed in a variety of ways, such as using it as a substitute for other oils in cooking. Another common use is to use as a moisturiser for either your body or hair. Admittedly, I couldn’t live without my little pot of oil after scorching my skin and hair in the Caribbean sunshine. Not only is it an excellent moisturiser but also I smelt all tropical and coconutty!

These were the reason I used coconut oil for, but the benefits of this super oil is extensive and I feel this list may continue to expand as it becomes increasingly common in the modern household. Some of my favourites benefits (health related of course) I have listed below…

Hair Care

As mentioned, coconut oil can be used on your hair as a moisturiser and has in actual fact be found to one of the best natural nutrients for your hair. The oil helps hair growth and general condition of the hair adding extra shine by massaging into damp hair.

Skin Care

Coconut oil is also excellently used as a massage oil, and works as an excellent moisturiser on all skin types, including dry skin. It also prevents appearance of aging such as wrinkles and sagging of skin. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. It can also be used as a makeup remover!

When using coconut oil for cooking the health benefits of consuming this oil are also impressive for the inside of our bodies as well. Just use the oil as a substitute for other oil products when cooking or baking. Or why not add into your smoothies to add a sweet coconut kick.

Heart Disease

Despite the high of content of coconut oil it is somewhat surprising that coconut is beneficial for the heart. It contains a high lauric acid content (50%), which actively prevents heart conditions such as high cholesterol and blood pressure.

Weight Loss

Again, despite the high fat content it would be believed that coconut oil would encourage weight gain. However, it contains short and medium-chain fatty acids which help reduce excessive weight. Furthermore, it improves the digestive system and increases the body metabolism therefore burning more energy.

Coconut oil helps strengthen the immune system by helping to fight harmful bacteria in the body

Healing and Infections

Due to the anti fungal properties of coconut oil, when applied to infected areas the oil provides a chemical layer that protects the infected body from possible infection. Furthermore, coconut oil speeds up the healing process of damaged tissue.

So, if that doesn’t give you an excuse to go buy yourself some coconut oil – I don’t know what will. Unfortunately, you cannot buy £2 tub’s here in the UK therefore unless you fancy paying £600 for a flight to some tropicl climate it’s going to be difficult to find a competitive price here.

However, I’ve been buying my coconut oil from one of the nations leading health stores, Holland & Barrett – follow the link and shop online today! Although the oil is a little pricey, the reason I shop at Holland & Barrett is due to the excellent promotions they continuously have running. Therefore, I end up saving money when I bulk buy all my ingredients and supplements (which I will get to at a later date) at once. The current promotion they have running is “everything buy one get one half price” but my favourite has the the “penny sale”.

Holland & Barrett offer a range of coconut oil, but my favourite that I cannot get enough of is the Perfectly Pure range which offers 450g oil. Best of all you can currently buy two £22.48, saving you almost £6.

So, go grab yourself a bargain and lather yourself in coconut goodi-ness! Enjoy! Fx
